Local Union 980 was chartered with the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades on January 2, 1918 with a total membership of twelve (12) wood workers employed at two (2) furniture-making companies in the St. Louis, Missouri area, who earned about $.25 cents per hour. As of December 1, 2005, Furniture Finishers, Maintenance Painters and Allied Industrial Workers Local Union 980 (as we are now known) has an average annual membership of 300 to 400 whose average hourly wages are approximately $9.25 per hour. Local Union 980 members truly represent a wide variety of job classifications ranging from sanitation workers and forklift drivers to spray painters and machine operators. The signatory manufacturers who employ our members are Arnold Defence & Electronics, W.K. Manufacturing, Killark Electric, Ralston Purina, Stout Marketing, Inc., and United Industries/Spectrum Brands.
